3rd APRIL 1982 - ARGENTINE FORCES ATTACK GRYTVIKEN Argentine forces attack Grytviken, South Georgia. Following an intense battle between Argentine forces and the Royal Marines detachment landed earlier from HMS Endurance. No one was killed during the battle but both sides incurred casualties. The Argentine Frigate Guerrico was badly damaged and an Argentine Puma helicopter was lost following the actions of the Royal Marine detachment. Having fought to a stalemate and cut off from HMS Endurance the Royal Marines forces laid down their arms, removed the explosives they had placed on the jetty and were taken off to the Bahia Paraiso. In London Parliament met in emergency session and approved the dispatch of a Task Force to recover the Falkland Islands The United Nations approved resolution 502. The first RAF elements of the task force deploy to Ascension Island. In the Falklands 52 school children are evacuated from Stanley in a convoy of 18 land rovers. |
