Rising star to perform live at Meet Your Navy 2008

A Royal Navy physical trainer on the verge of pop superstardom is lined up to entertain the crowds at Meet Your Navy 08 in Portsmouth this summer.

Jay Picton will perform his first open-air concert – possibly from the flight deck of his former ship HMS Gloucester - during the event at Portsmouth Naval Base from July 25-27.

The 24-year-old has already hit the top of an independent online chart after unofficially releasing a three-track demo and his myspace website has stacked up more than 140,000 hits.

Jay, who joined the RN seven years ago, said: “It will be amazing to perform at Meet Your Navy, especially on my old ship. This will be my first open-air performance and I can’t wait to perform on HMS Gloucester.”

He will be on stage for about 30 minutes on each of the three days, performing songs he has written himself and exclusively showcasing them for the first time. “Singing my own songs on a warship in a Navy environment will be an unforgettable experience and will add something a bit special to Meet Your Navy.”

Jay, a leading physical trainer currently serving at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport, discovered his musical talents by accident. A couple of years ago he was on sick leave after injuring his knee while coaching rugby and took up the guitar. He had already written a few songs while serving abroad and was discovered in a small Portsmouth bar by a top music producer who had Jay recording in the studio within days.

His Meet Your Navy appearance coincides with the official tour to promote his first single release due at the end of August. Jay’s manager Paul Stacey said: “The timing is perfect – I’m confident that come the end of July Jay will be a household name throughout the UK.”

Royal Navy vessels of all shapes and sizes will be open to the public during Meet Your Navy and a fleet of foreign navy ships will also be on show. Visitors will also be treated to a host of military displays on air, land and sea.
